Mountain Of Sound

This was a student project where we worked alongside FilzFelt to utilize felt off cuts to develop and create product ideas using material that otherwise would be discarded.

Sustainability Focus

We read and applied what we learned from this book. One of the major lessons I learned from this book is that being able to recycle goods does not necessarily mean sustainable. What I understand now is that when we design a product we also need to think more about the lifecycle as well.

I could go on and on but given the chance I would highly recommend anyone to read this - Nathan

Material Goals

  • Felt Off Cuts

This project focused on sustainability so we were provided naturally dyed felt off cuts to test, brainstorm and develop ideas as to what could be done with them

  • Repurposed Lumber

I acquired a repurposed oak floor beam with a goal to explore what further material could be used that otherwise would normally go to waste

Upon receiving the material outlined above it was game on in terms of making something out of it. As someone who had a hard time working in public libraries or spaces due to distractions I was inclined to develop some ideas around that issue.

Everyone has their own preference in sound when trying to focus

  • After interviewing around a dozen classmates and strangers I found it interesting to learn how they worked. Many would plug in headphones while a few preferred silence or the noise in their working environment.

  • After my interviews with the few that preferred silence they said the only draw back was that it was easier to be distracted. At the same time they felt more socially involved and connected within the space they were in.

  • With the material I had at hand I wanted to create a space for both extremes. Felt is a natural sound dampener so not only could it cut distractions out but people who need sound to focus could play music from a speaker. These mobile personal spaces in a way can act as a personal amphitheater without those around you having to hear it.

Next Step Was Prototype Development

Make it stand out.

Material Mapping

For the final model I was provided various scrap felt pieces and I had to find a way to incorporate them into a design. When brainstorming ideas on how make a final model I was inspired by the scraps laying on my desk.

Mountain Of Sound

When piled up the pieces reminded me of a mountainous. I scanned and laid the pieces out and settled on the form you see on the right. I liked how the exposed Oak looked in the previous model so I left cut out gaps to get the same look and show off the beautiful Oak grains.
